Discover Derbyshire
If you are looking for motorhome hire in Derbyshire, you have chosen one of the most accessible counties from our Pontefract depot. Derbyshire sits immediately south of South Yorkshire, and the county is dominated by the Peak District National Park, the first national park to be designated in the United Kingdom in 1951. From the limestone dales of the White Peak to the gritstone edges of the Dark Peak, Derbyshire offers landscapes of breathtaking variety.
Chatsworth, Bakewell, and the White Peak
Chatsworth House, seat of the Duke of Devonshire, is one of the grandest country houses in England. Set in parkland designed by Capability Brown along the banks of the River Derwent, it houses an extraordinary art collection, magnificent state rooms, and beautiful gardens. The farmyard and adventure playground make it a superb family day out. Nearby Haddon Hall, a remarkably well-preserved medieval manor house, offers a more intimate experience and is widely considered one of the finest examples of its kind in the country.
Bakewell, the only town within the Peak District National Park, is famous for the Bakewell pudding (not tart, as the locals will tell you). Its five-arched medieval bridge over the River Wye, its Monday market, and its independent shops make it a delightful place to spend an afternoon. The Monsal Trail, a walking and cycling route along a former railway line through dramatic limestone scenery, passes through several tunnels and offers some of the finest views in the Peak District.
Matlock, Matlock Bath, and the Derwent Valley
Matlock and Matlock Bath sit in the gorge of the River Derwent and feel unlike anywhere else in England. Matlock Bath, with its Victorian promenade, amusement arcades, and cable car up to the Heights of Abraham, has the atmosphere of an Alpine resort transplanted to the English Midlands. The Cromford Mills nearby, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, mark the birthplace of the factory system and are among the most important industrial heritage sites in the world.
Our Motorhome Fleet
Our fleet includes 2-berth, 4-berth, and 6-berth motorhomes with both manual and automatic options, and prices starting from 135 per night. Every hire includes comprehensive insurance and 24/7 roadside support. Selected vehicles are dog-friendly, and if this is your first time hiring a motorhome, we provide a full walkthrough before you set off. Our packing checklist covers everything you need to bring.
Buxton, Castleton, and the Dark Peak
Buxton, the highest market town in England at over 300 metres, is a handsome spa town with Georgian architecture, the beautifully restored Opera House, and the Pavilion Gardens. The town makes an excellent base for exploring the western Peak District, with the dramatic limestone gorge of Chee Dale and the caverns of Poole's Hole nearby. Castleton, at the head of the Hope Valley, is another popular destination, known for its four show caves, the ruined Peveril Castle, and the rare Blue John stone found only in this area.
Walking in Derbyshire
For walkers, Derbyshire is exceptional. Kinder Scout, the highest point in the Peak District at 636 metres, was the site of the famous mass trespass of 1932 that helped secure the right to roam across open country. The Pennine Way begins at Edale, just below Kinder, and heads north toward West Yorkshire and beyond. Dovedale, with its stepping stones and towering limestone pillars, is one of the most popular walking destinations in the country, while the Tissington Trail and High Peak Trail offer gentler routes along former railway lines.
The drive from our Pontefract depot to the Peak District takes you south via the M1 and then west on the A619 or A623 toward Chesterfield and Bakewell. Chesterfield, with its famous crooked spire, sits at the gateway to the national park and is within 50 minutes of our base. From there, Bakewell is another 20 minutes, Matlock 25 minutes, and Buxton around 40 minutes. Derbyshire's network of campsites makes it easy to base yourself in the heart of the countryside and explore at your own pace.
