Our Family Fleet
Every motorhome in our fleet comes with multiple seatbelts and child seat fittings as standard. If you have a rear-facing infant seat, a forward-facing child seat, or a booster for an older child, you can secure it properly before setting off. Our 4-berth Elddis Compass Avantgarde 196 suits families of three or four comfortably, with a fixed rear bed for parents and a convertible lounge bed for children. The 6-berth Elddis Evolution 196 is built for larger families - it sleeps six across a rear island bed, a drop-down double over the cab, and a convertible dinette, so families of five or six have proper sleeping space without anyone being cramped.
Both manual and automatic gearboxes are available. If one parent does most of the driving and is nervous about handling a larger vehicle, the automatic makes a real difference on long family trips. Every hire includes fully comprehensive insurance, 24/7 roadside assistance, and unlimited mileage.
Where to Take the Family
You collect from our Pontefract depot and the whole of Britain opens up. The Yorkshire Dales are under an hour away - Bolton Abbey's stepping stones, waterfall trails at Aysgarth, and wide-open spaces where children run freely. The North York Moors have steam trains and beaches at Scarborough and Whitby. But these are just the start.
The Lake District (2.5 hours) is outstanding for families - boat trips on Windermere, fell walks scaled to young legs, Beatrix Potter's Hill Top Farm, and Go Ape at Grizedale Forest. Northumberland (2 hours) has vast empty beaches, Bamburgh and Alnwick castles (the Harry Potter castle), and the Farne Islands boat trips to see puffins and seals. The Peak District (1 hour) has Chatsworth farmyard and playground, show caves at Castleton, and gentle cycling on the Monsal Trail.
For longer trips, Cornwall has surfing beaches, the Eden Project, and the Minack Theatre. Devon has Dartmoor ponies, river swimming, and the South West Coast Path. Snowdonia has mountain railways, Zip World, and beaches on the Llyn Peninsula. Scotland has Edinburgh Zoo, boat trips on Loch Ness, and sandy beaches on the Moray coast that children never expect to find. Rainy Days and Practical Realities
British weather is unpredictable, and anyone planning a family motorhome holiday needs a rainy day plan. The good news is that a motorhome handles bad weather far better than a tent. You have a warm, dry living space with heating, a kitchen for hot chocolate, and enough room for card games or board games around the table. Many family campsites have indoor swimming pools, soft play areas, and games rooms - sites like Primrose Valley in Filey, Haggerston Castle in Northumberland, and Parkdean Resorts across the country all offer wet weather activities.
Every region has indoor options too. The National Railway Museum in York, Eureka in Halifax, the Deep aquarium in Hull, the Science Museum and Natural History Museum if you head to London, We The Curious in Bristol, Magna Science Centre in Rotherham, Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh. Wherever you park the motorhome, rainy day entertainment is never far away.
What About Young Children and Babies?
We regularly hire to families with babies and toddlers. A motorhome is actually easier than a hotel with a very young child - you have your own space, your own kitchen for warming bottles and preparing food, and you can put a child down for a nap in a familiar bed at any time. Travel cots fit in the living area of our 4 and 6 berth models. The only additional consideration is that children under three need a proper car seat for travel, and children up to 12 or 135cm tall need a booster seat - bring your own as you would for any car journey.
One thing we do not provide is bedding - this applies to all hires, not just families. Bring your own duvets, pillows, and sheets, or sleeping bags for the children. Everything else - kitchen equipment, gas, toilet chemicals, heating - is included.
Family-Friendly Campsites
Campsites across the UK are overwhelmingly welcoming to families. Many offer playgrounds, games rooms, and outdoor activity areas. Some of the larger sites have swimming pools, adventure playgrounds, and organised activities during school holidays. But equally, some of the most memorable family motorhome nights are spent on quieter sites - small farms and certified locations where the only entertainment is a torch, a clear sky full of stars, and the sound of the countryside.
Several of our dog-friendly motorhomes are popular with families who want to bring the pet along. Many campsites welcome dogs too, so the whole family really can travel together.

From start to finish, it was a dream. Comfort was top of the list – we clocked up 5–6 hour drives with zero numb bums or backache. The convertible bed? Surprisingly lush!
