Discover Manchester
Looking for motorhome hire near Manchester? Heath's Motorhome Hire is based in Pontefract, approximately 60 minutes from the city centre via the M62. Manchester is a city that needs little introduction. From the Industrial Revolution to the music scene of the 1980s and 1990s, from world-famous football to a thriving food and drink culture, this is a city that has shaped the modern world and continues to reinvent itself with remarkable energy. It also sits on the doorstep of some of England's finest national parks, making it an excellent starting point for campervan hire.
Culture, Music, and History in Manchester
The city centre offers an extraordinary concentration of cultural attractions. The John Rylands Library on Deansgate, a stunning Neo-Gothic building, houses one of the finest collections of rare books and manuscripts in the world, including a fragment of the Gospel of St John dating from around 125 AD. Manchester Art Gallery holds an outstanding collection of Pre-Raphaelite paintings, while the Whitworth, set in Whitworth Park, combines art with parkland in a beautifully extended Victorian building.
The Northern Quarter, centred on Oldham Street and Tib Street, is the creative heart of the city, packed with independent record shops, vintage clothing stores, craft bars, and street art. Across the city, the Science and Industry Museum, housed in the world's oldest surviving passenger railway station, tells the story of Manchester's extraordinary contribution to industry, science, and innovation. The Imperial War Museum North at Salford Quays, designed by Daniel Libeskind, is one of the most striking museum buildings in the country.
Salford Quays and MediaCityUK, built on the site of the former Manchester Docks, now house the BBC and ITV studios, The Lowry theatre and gallery, and a waterfront lined with restaurants and bars. Old Trafford and the Etihad Stadium draw football fans from around the world, and the National Football Museum in the city centre celebrates the history of the game.
The Peak District, the Lakes, and Beyond
For motorhome travellers, Manchester's real advantage is what lies beyond the city. The Peak District National Park begins just 30 minutes to the south and east, with the gritstone edges of the Dark Peak, the limestone dales of the White Peak, and the walking country around Kinder Scout all within easy reach. The Lake District is around 90 minutes to the north via the M6, and the Lancashire coast at Blackpool and Morecambe is accessible in a similar time.
The Pennine moors rise immediately to the east of the city, with Saddleworth and the Standedge area offering dramatic walking within half an hour. The West Yorkshire valleys of the Calder and the Colne are accessible via the M62, and the Yorkshire Dales are within 90 minutes. Manchester's position at the heart of the northern motorway network makes it one of the best-connected cities in England for touring by motorhome.

Getting to Our Depot from Manchester
From our Pontefract depot, the drive to Manchester follows the M62 westward. The route crosses the Pennines at their highest motorway point, with views across the moors on either side, before descending into Greater Manchester. The M60 ring road provides easy access to all parts of the conurbation. Leeds benefits from excellent road connections too - the M621 links to the M62 and M1, giving you rapid access to the national motorway network from our depot.
Festivals and Events
Manchester is a great base for festival-goers. The city's calendar runs year-round, from the Manchester International Festival to the Christmas Markets. A motorhome gives you a comfortable base with your own kitchen, shower, and proper beds, whether you are heading to a festival or simply exploring the region at your own pace. For families, couples, or anyone looking for a weekend escape, collect from Pontefract and the whole of Northern England opens up before you.
