About Dewsbury

Discover Dewsbury

Dewsbury sits at the heart of the Heavy Woollen District in West Yorkshire, a cluster of towns whose names were once synonymous with the production of shoddy and mungo, recycled wool fabrics that clothed much of the world. At just 20 minutes from our Pontefract depot, Dewsbury is one of the closest towns to our base and provides an extremely convenient collection point for motorhome hire.

Dewsbury Minster, properly the Minster Church of All Saints, is one of the most historically significant churches in the region. Its origins stretch back to the seventh century, and the present building contains fragments of an Anglo-Saxon cross and Norman stonework alongside later medieval additions. The church's annual Christmas service, the "Devil's Knell", has been held since the fifteenth century, with the tenor bell rung once for every year since the birth of Christ. It is a tradition that draws visitors from across the country.

The town's open market, held on Wednesdays and Saturdays, has been trading for centuries and retains a genuine community atmosphere. The imposing Victorian and Edwardian buildings along the main streets are a reminder of the prosperity that the textile trade brought to this part of West Yorkshire. Pioneer House, the art deco former cinema, and the handsome Town Hall are particularly notable buildings that give the town centre real character.

Dewsbury's position at the junction of the Calder and Spen valleys gives it a natural connection to the surrounding countryside. Dewsbury Country Park, on the banks of the River Calder, provides pleasant riverside walking, while the Spen Valley Greenway offers a traffic-free cycling and walking route through the old railway corridor toward Cleckheaton and Low Moor.

For motorhome travellers, Dewsbury's location is practical and well-connected. The M62 is minutes away, giving direct access to the Pennines and Lancashire to the west, and to Leeds and the A1(M) to the east. Wakefield, with the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and Hepworth Gallery, is just six miles south. Huddersfield and the Holme Valley are seven miles to the south-west, while Bradford and the gateway to Bronte Country are 12 miles north.

The nearby town of Batley, just two miles away, is home to the Batley Frontier, a large entertainment venue, and the Bagshaw Museum, set in a Victorian Gothic mansion in Wilton Park. Mirfield, three miles to the south, sits on the banks of the Calder and has a pleasant riverside walk and the Community of the Resurrection, an Anglican monastery with beautiful grounds open to visitors.

From our Pontefract depot, the drive to Dewsbury takes approximately 20 minutes via the M62 and A638. It is one of the quickest and most convenient towns to reach from our base. Collect your motorhome, stock up at the supermarket, and you could be heading into the Yorkshire Dales, the Peak District, or the North York Moors within the hour.
