The obvious starting point from Pontefract is the cluster of excellent markets within an hour's drive. York's St Nicholas Fair runs from mid-November through to Christmas Eve, with stalls lining Parliament Street and St Sampson's Square beneath the shadow of the Minster. The setting is genuinely magical - medieval streets, proper Yorkshire food stalls, and a giant Christmas tree. York Rowntree Park Caravan Club Site stays open through the winter and puts you a pleasant 15-minute walk along the river from the city centre.

Harrogate's Christmas market fills Montpellier Hill and the surrounding streets with over 100 stalls of handmade crafts, artisan food, and local gin. A Christmas markets motorhome trip to Harrogate has a more refined atmosphere than York - Harrogate does elegant rather than bustling - and Betty's Tea Rooms at Christmas is something everyone should experience at least once. Ripley Caravan Park is a reliable year-round option nearby, about 10 minutes north of town.

Leeds Christkindelmarkt on Millennium Square brings a genuine German-style market to the city centre, with bratwurst, stollen, and carved wooden decorations. It typically runs from mid-November to late December. For motorhome parking, Moor Lodge Park near Bardsey keeps you within a 20-minute drive. Manchester's Christmas Markets are the largest in the UK outside London, sprawling across multiple city centre squares from Albert Square to Exchange Square. Each area has a different national theme - German, French, Italian - and the range of food is exceptional.

Further Afield in the UK

Edinburgh's Christmas runs from late November through early January, centred on Princes Street Gardens with a Ferris wheel, ice rink, and market stalls against the backdrop of the Castle. It is one of the most visually spectacular settings for a Christmas market anywhere in Europe. Edinburgh Caravan Club Site at Mortonhall is open year-round and connects to the city by bus. The drive from Yorkshire takes around four hours up the A1.

Bath Christmas Market fills the streets around Bath Abbey with over 170 stalls of handmade British crafts. Unlike many UK markets that lean heavily on imported goods, Bath insists that stallholders make their products themselves, which gives it a genuinely artisan feel. The market runs from late November to mid-December. Bath Marina and Caravan Park offers pitches with hook-ups, about two miles from the city centre. If you are heading south, you might combine Bath with a visit to Bristol or Wells for extra market browsing.

Christmas Markets by Motorhome in Europe

Crossing the Channel opens up an entirely different level of Christmas markets motorhome adventure. The European tradition runs deeper, the markets are larger, and the atmosphere - cold air, wooden chalets, the smell of cinnamon and roasted almonds - is simply unmatched.

Note for 2026 European travel: UK travellers will need an ETIAS travel authorisation (approximately seven euros, valid three years) to enter Schengen countries including France, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Apply online before travel. Check the launch date as it has been delayed several times.

Cologne operates not one but seven separate Christmas markets across the city, the largest and most famous being the Markt am Dom right at the foot of the cathedral. The cathedral itself, lit up at night with the market stalls spread before it, is one of those views that stops you in your tracks. Cologne also has a dedicated motorhome stellplatz on the Rhine riverbank, putting you within walking distance of the markets. The drive from Calais is about four hours via Belgium.

Strasbourg calls itself the Capital of Christmas, and with good reason. The market has been running since 1570, making it one of the oldest in Europe. The stalls fill the Place Broglie and the area around the cathedral, and the entire old town - a UNESCO World Heritage site - is draped in lights and decoration. There is a well-regarded aire for motorhomes at the Parking de l'Etoile, from which you can walk or take the tram into the centre. Bruges is the most compact option and arguably the prettiest. The market fills the Markt square, surrounded by medieval guild houses, and the whole city feels like a Christmas card. Belgian waffles, hot chocolate, and speculoos biscuits replace the mulled wine and bratwurst, and the atmosphere is wonderfully relaxed. Bruges is easily reachable in a day from Calais, making it ideal for a short winter motorhome break.

Practical Tips for Winter Market Trips

Any Christmas markets motorhome trip requires a bit more preparation than summer touring. Gas consumption increases significantly when you are running the heating overnight - expect to use roughly twice as much as you would in August. Our motorhomes come with a blown-air heating system that keeps the interior comfortable even in freezing conditions, but carrying a spare gas bottle is sensible for longer European trips.

Water systems need attention in cold weather. The onboard tank and pipes are insulated, but if temperatures drop below minus five for extended periods, there is a risk of freezing. Run the heating overnight and keep the internal temperature above 10 degrees and you should be fine. Many winter-open campsites provide heated service blocks, which removes the concern entirely.

Daylight is limited in December, so plan your driving for morning hours where possible. Most Christmas markets are at their best after dark anyway, so arriving at your campsite by mid-afternoon gives you time to set up before heading into town for the evening.
