Why We Started Heath's Motorhome Hire: Our Story

People sometimes ask why we started a motorhome hire business in Pontefract, and the honest answer is that it grew out of something we loved doing ourselves. There was no business plan hatched in a boardroom. No market research, no consultants, no spreadsheet that told us the numbers worked. There was a family that loved motorhome holidays, a growing conviction that more people should try them, and eventually the realisation that we could help make that happen.

How It Started

It started, as these things often do, with a holiday. We bought our first motorhome - a second-hand Fiat-based coachbuilt that was more character than comfort - and took it to Cornwall for a fortnight. The children were young enough to think that sleeping in a vehicle was the most exciting thing that had ever happened to them, and old enough to climb down to beaches and explore rock pools without being carried. That holiday changed something. The freedom of it, the simplicity, the way the days unfolded without schedules or check-in times - it was a different kind of family time, and we wanted more of it.

Over the next few years, the motorhome took us to Scotland, Wales, the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, and eventually across the Channel to France. Each trip reinforced the same feeling: this was how we wanted to spend our time together. We upgraded the motorhome, then upgraded again. We learned what mattered - a decent habitation heater, a fixed rear bed, a shower that actually worked - and what did not. We made the mistakes every motorhomer makes (the height barrier incident - we do not talk about it) and accumulated the quiet expertise that comes from hundreds of nights spent in a motorhome rather than reading about one.

From Hobby to Business

Friends started asking if they could borrow the motorhome. Then friends of friends. Then people we barely knew. Everyone had the same questions: Is it hard to drive? Where do you stay? How much does it cost? We found ourselves having the same conversation repeatedly, evangelising for a type of holiday that most people had never considered but immediately understood when it was explained properly.

The idea of hiring out a motorhome had been floating around for a while, but it was a conversation after one particular trip - sitting on the motorhome step with a cup of tea, watching the sun go down over the Dales - that turned it from an idea into a plan. If we could give other families, couples, and friends the kind of experiences we had been having, and do it from our home base in West Yorkshire, it felt like something worth doing.

We started small. One motorhome, properly maintained, thoroughly cleaned, and handed over with the kind of detailed briefing we wished someone had given us when we were starting out. The first few hirers were nervous - the same nerves we remembered from our own first trip - and watching them come back enthusiastic, full of stories, already planning their next adventure, was genuinely satisfying. That feeling has not changed.

Why Elddis, and Why Five

When it came to building the fleet, we chose Elddis motorhomes deliberately. They are built in Consett, County Durham - about an hour and a half from us - and we have always valued being able to deal with a British manufacturer. The build quality is excellent, the layouts are practical for real-world use rather than just looking good in a showroom, and critically, they drive well. Our customers are often first-time motorhomers, and a vehicle that handles predictably and parks without drama matters more than a flashy spec sheet.

We run five motorhomes in our fleet - 2-berth, 4-berth, and 6-berth options with both manual and automatic gearboxes. Five is a deliberate choice. It is enough to offer genuine variety and availability, but small enough that every vehicle gets the attention it deserves between hires. We know each motorhome individually. We know which one has a slightly stiff habitation door latch, which one has the best water pressure, and which one the dog lovers always request. That level of familiarity is only possible with a small fleet.

Why Pontefract Works

Heath's Motorhome Hire is based in Pontefract because it is home. But it also happens to be a brilliant location for a motorhome hire business. The A1(M) and M62 are minutes away, giving customers fast access to the Yorkshire Dales, the North York Moors, the Yorkshire Coast, the Lake District, the Peak District, and the motorway network heading south, north, or west. You can collect a motorhome from us in the morning and be setting up at a campsite in the Dales by lunchtime.

Pontefract is not a tourist destination, and we have never pretended otherwise. But within ninety minutes of our depot, you can be standing on the cliffs at Whitby, walking through the woods at Bolton Abbey, browsing the market at Skipton, or climbing the steps to York Minster. Within two hours, you are in the Lake District or the Scottish Borders. The geography does the heavy lifting.

What We Have Learned

Running a motorhome hire business has taught us things that owning a motorhome never did. We have learned that first-time hirers need patience and reassurance, not a rapid-fire technical briefing. We have learned that families with young children have completely different needs from retired couples on a three-week European tour. We have learned that the motorhome itself is only part of the equation - the advice, the route suggestions, the campsite recommendations, and the honest answers about what will and will not work matter just as much.

We have also learned that motorhome holidays change people. Not in a dramatic way, but in a quiet, persistent one. Couples rediscover conversation. Families spend time together without screens. People who thought they needed five-star hotels find that they sleep better overlooking the sea. The simplicity of it - everything you need, nothing you do not - appeals to something fundamental.

Every week, someone collects a motorhome from our depot for the first time, slightly nervous, slightly excited, not entirely sure what they are doing. And almost without exception, they bring it back wanting to go again. That is why we started this business, and it is why we keep doing it.

That is Heath's Motorhome Hire in a nutshell - a Pontefract family that fell in love with the open road and wanted to share it. If you are thinking about hiring a motorhome - whether for the first time or the fiftieth - we would love to help.
