First-Time Motorhome Hire
If you have never hired a motorhome before, the prospect can feel daunting. How do you drive something that size? Where do you park it? What happens when you arrive at a campsite? These are perfectly reasonable questions, and at Heath's Motorhome Hire in Pontefract, we hear them all the time. The good news is that motorhome travel is far more straightforward than most people imagine, and with a little preparation and our thorough handover, you will be on the road with confidence in no time at all.
Let us start with the driving, because that is usually the biggest concern. Our motorhomes are built on standard commercial vehicle chassis — the same platforms used by large vans and delivery vehicles that you see on the road every day. If you hold a standard Category B driving licence, you are legally entitled to drive any motorhome in our fleet. The driving position is higher than a car, which actually gives you better visibility of the road ahead. The steering is power-assisted, the gearboxes are smooth, and modern motorhomes handle far better than many people expect. Within the first few miles, most of our first-time hirers tell us that it feels surprisingly natural.
That said, there are some important differences to be aware of. Motorhomes are wider and taller than cars, so you need to pay attention to width restrictions, low bridges, and overhanging branches. We will give you the exact height and width of your vehicle during our handover, and we strongly recommend noting these figures somewhere visible in the cab. Wing mirrors are larger than car mirrors and give you an excellent view of what is behind and beside you — use them constantly, especially when changing lanes or navigating tight spaces. Reversing takes practice, and we always suggest having a passenger guide you when backing into a campsite pitch or parking space. There is no shame in taking it slowly.
Parking a motorhome is simpler than you might think, provided you plan ahead. Most supermarkets and out-of-town retail parks have spaces that can accommodate a motorhome, and many tourist attractions have dedicated motorhome parking areas. Town centre car parks can be trickier, so we recommend using park-and-ride services or parking slightly outside the centre and walking in. Height barriers are the main hazard — always check before you commit to entering a car park.
Before you collect your motorhome, we conduct a comprehensive handover that covers everything you need to know. This is not a rushed five-minute walkthrough — we take our time to ensure you are comfortable with every aspect of the vehicle. We will show you how to operate the heating and hot water system, how to use the cooker and fridge, how to fill and empty the water tanks, how to connect to mains electricity at a campsite, and how to manage the waste water system. We will also cover the driving controls, the dashboard instruments, and the operation of the awning, if fitted. You are welcome to ask as many questions as you like, and we will not rush you out of the depot until you feel genuinely ready.
Setting up at a campsite is one of those things that feels complicated in theory but becomes second nature after the first time. When you arrive, you will typically be directed to a pitch by the site staff. Level the motorhome using the levelling chocks we provide, connect the mains electricity hook-up cable, and you are essentially done. If you want to fill up with fresh water or empty the waste tanks, most sites have designated service points with clear instructions. The whole process takes about ten minutes once you know what you are doing — and after your first night, you will wonder what all the fuss was about.
We recommend that first-time hirers keep their initial trip relatively short and local. A long weekend exploring the Yorkshire Dales or the North York Moors is ideal — close enough to our Pontefract depot that you are never far from help if you need it, but adventurous enough to give you a genuine taste of the motorhome experience. The campsites in these areas are well-established and accustomed to first-time visitors, so the staff will be happy to help with anything you are unsure about.
A few practical tips that our experienced customers always pass on to newcomers: pack less than you think you need, because storage space is generous but not unlimited. Bring soft bags rather than rigid suitcases, as they are easier to stow in the under-bed compartments. Keep a torch handy for evening walks to the campsite facilities. Take a basic tool kit and a roll of gaffer tape — they solve more problems than you might expect. And above all, relax. A motorhome holiday is supposed to be enjoyable, not stressful, and the beauty of having your accommodation on wheels is that nothing needs to be perfect — you can always move on and try somewhere new.
Many of our most loyal customers started as nervous first-timers who were not entirely sure they would enjoy it. Within a day, they were hooked. The freedom, the flexibility, the sense of adventure, and the sheer pleasure of waking up in a beautiful place with everything you need right there — it is a style of travel that, once experienced, is hard to give up. We would love to help you discover it for yourself.
