Discover Harrogate
Harrogate is the kind of town that makes you want to slow down. Its wide, tree-lined streets, its immaculate flower gardens, and its air of unhurried elegance are the product of two centuries as one of England's premier spa towns. But beneath the genteel surface, Harrogate is a place of real substance — a gateway to some of the finest countryside in the Yorkshire Dales, and a community with a strong independent spirit. At approximately 35 minutes from our Pontefract depot, Harrogate is an excellent starting point for a motorhome adventure with Heath's Motorhome Hire.
The Valley Gardens are the town's horticultural showpiece. These 17 acres of beautifully maintained gardens, set in a valley just south of the town centre, include formal flower beds, a Japanese garden, a boating pond, and one of the largest collections of mineral springs in the world. The gardens are connected to The Stray, a 200-acre area of protected open grassland that wraps around the southern and western edges of the town centre — a unique feature that gives Harrogate its spacious, green character.
The Royal Pump Room Museum, housed in the octagonal building that once served as the town's main pump room, tells the story of Harrogate's rise as a spa destination. You can still taste the sulphur water from the original well — an experience that is memorable, if not entirely pleasant. The Turkish Baths, just around the corner, are one of the most beautifully restored Victorian bathing establishments in the country, with their Moorish arches, terrazzo floors, and painted walls still in use today.
Harrogate's shopping scene is centred on the streets around Parliament Street and Cambridge Crescent. Independent boutiques, antiques shops, and speciality food stores sit alongside the national chains, and the town has more than its share of excellent restaurants and cafes. Betty's Cafe Tea Rooms, a branch of the famous York establishment, occupies a grand corner building on Parliament Street and is a Harrogate institution — expect a queue at weekends, but it is worth the wait.
The real magic of Harrogate for motorhome travellers lies in what surrounds it. Nidderdale, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, begins just a few miles west of the town. This broad, green valley — dominated by the reservoirs of Gouthwaite, Scar House, and Angram — offers walking, cycling, and birdwatching in a landscape that feels genuinely remote. The village of Pateley Bridge, at the head of the lower valley, has an excellent local museum and serves as the starting point for walks up to Brimham Rocks, a collection of extraordinary millstone grit formations sculpted by wind and rain over millions of years.
Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site just four miles west of Ripon and within easy reach of Harrogate, is one of the most important historic sites in England. The ruins of the twelfth-century Cistercian abbey are among the largest and best-preserved in the country, and the Georgian water garden that surrounds them — with its temples, statues, and ornamental ponds — is a masterpiece of landscape design. The deer park above the gardens adds a further dimension, with herds of red and fallow deer grazing beneath ancient trees.
Knaresborough, Harrogate's near neighbour, is worth a visit in its own right. The town clings to the steep sides of the River Nidd gorge, and the view from the castle ruins — looking down over the viaduct, the rowing boats, and the Mother Shipton's Cave — is one of the most photographed in Yorkshire. Ripley Castle, a few miles north of Harrogate, offers guided tours, beautiful gardens, and a deer park.
The drive from Pontefract to Harrogate follows the A1(M) northward before turning west on the A658 or A661. It is a pleasant, straightforward journey that takes around 35 minutes and lands you in the heart of one of Yorkshire's most rewarding areas. From Harrogate, the Dales stretch westward, York lies to the east, and the North York Moors are barely an hour to the north-east. Collect your motorhome and all of North Yorkshire is your playground.
