York Minster, the Shambles, and the City Walls
York Minster is the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe, with the Great East Window containing the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the world. The Shambles is a narrow medieval lane of overhanging timber-framed buildings now lined with independent shops and cafes. The JORVIK Viking Centre recreates tenth-century Viking York. The National Railway Museum houses the Mallard, royal coaches, and the Japanese Shinkansen - both museums are free. The city walls are the longest and best-preserved medieval walls in England, and a walk around the full circuit takes about two hours with elevated views across the rooftops and the Minster.

Head northwest from York and within 45 minutes you reach the Yorkshire Dales - Wharfedale, Nidderdale, and the market towns of Skipton, Ripon, and Masham. Head northeast and the North York Moors begin within an hour, with Helmsley, Pickering, and the steam railway to Whitby all within comfortable reach. Book well ahead as it is one of the most popular sites in the country. Important: do not use the postcode in sat nav as it routes via low bridges. York Beechwood Grange on the northeast side has 100 hardstanding pitches with Monks Cross park-and-ride nearby for easy city access. York Caravan Park on Stockton Lane is a five-star adults-only park with 55 fully serviced super pitches just 2 miles from the Minster. York Meadows near Sheriff Hutton has family-friendly pitches with a play area and Castle Howard 5 miles away.

Heated shower block, laundry, motorhome service point, TV booster system, and Wi-Fi. A back gate leads to a parade of local shops and restaurants. Important: do not use the site postcode in sat nav as it routes via low bridges - approach via the A64 and A19 following signs to Rowntree Park. The site can be prone to flooding due to the riverside location but flood defences are in place. Book well ahead - this is one of the most popular sites in the country. Non-members welcome. A Gold Award site just off the A64 on the north-east side of York and a sister site to Rowntree Park. 100 hardstanding pitches with electric hook-up, modern shower block, laundry, children's play area, dog walking field, and motorhome service point. Monks Cross park-and-ride nearby for easy city access - a 15 to 20 minute ride into the centre. A good alternative if Rowntree Park is full. Non-members welcome. Open all year.

Five-star adults-only touring park on Stockton Lane, just 2 miles from York Minster and inside the ring road. Part of the Tranquil Parks group. 55 fully serviced super pitches set in 7 acres, each with 16-amp electric, water, drainage, TV hook-up, and free Wi-Fi, hedged on three sides for privacy. Luxury heated amenity block with private shower rooms (each with shower, toilet, sink, and dressing area), fishing lake, and wooded BBQ and picnic area. Organic rare-breed cattle graze in the surrounding fields. Bus service from the park gate runs 3 times per hour into the city centre. Open mid-March to early January.

Family-friendly park tucked away along a private lane on the outskirts of Sheriff Hutton, around 8 miles north of York in the Howardian Hills. Hardstanding, grass, and super pitches with electric hook-up. Individual shower and bathroom facilities including baths, shop selling essentials, children's play area with swings, zipwire, and climbing frame, plus outdoor table tennis and giant games. Sheriff Hutton village is a short walk away with pubs and shops, and Castle Howard is just 5 miles. Park-and-ride into York from Monks Cross. Open March to October.

“OG FRIENDLY 🐾 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ We took a chance on hiring a motorhome for our Scotland road trip – just me, the husband, and one of our dogs – and honestly, we’re now completely converted (pun fully intended). From start to finish, it was a dream. Comfort was top of the list – we clocked up 5–6 hour drives with zero numb bums or backache. The convertible bed? Surprisingly lush!
