About This Event

About Download Festival

Download Festival is the home of rock, metal, and alternative music in the United Kingdom. Held annually at Donington Park in Leicestershire, it draws around 100,000 fans across three days of heavyweight guitar music, from classic rock legends to the newest names in metalcore and punk. From our depot at Heath's Motorhome Hire in Pontefract, Donington Park is approximately an hour and forty minutes south via the M1 and A42 - one of the most accessible major festivals from our base.

Donington Park has hosted heavy music since the Monsters of Rock festival began there in 1980. Download Festival, its successor since 2003, has maintained the site's reputation as sacred ground for rock fans. The headline acts on the Main Stage read like a hall of fame of heavy music, with legendary bands returning to Donington alongside the next generation of artists. The second and third stages - and the smaller tents scattered across the site - programme a depth of talent that covers every corner of the heavy music spectrum, from doom metal and progressive rock to ska punk and hardcore.

The atmosphere at Download is unlike any other festival. The crowd is passionate, knowledgeable, and overwhelmingly friendly. The stereotype of the intimidating metal fan could not be further from the truth - Download regulars are some of the most welcoming festival-goers in the country. The traditions of the festival - the wall of death, the circle pit, the massed singing of Bohemian Rhapsody in the campsite at midnight - create a sense of community that keeps people returning year after year. Fancy dress is widespread, the camaraderie is genuine, and the shared love of loud music binds the whole thing together.

A motorhome is a brilliant way to attend Download. The festival's nickname of "Drownload" - earned through several spectacularly muddy years - tells you everything you need to know about the value of having a solid roof, a dry bed, and a working shower. The festival site is on low-lying ground beside the racing circuit, and heavy rain can turn the camping fields into a challenge. A motorhome lifts you above the mud, both literally and metaphorically, and the comfort of retreating to your own space after ten hours of live music is not to be underestimated.

Download offers dedicated motorhome and campervan camping areas with electrical hook-ups available. Motorhome tickets are purchased separately through the festival's official website and include a pitch large enough for your vehicle plus an awning or outdoor seating area. The motorhome fields are typically positioned with reasonable access to the arena and the main facilities. Book early, as motorhome pitches are limited in number and sell out well ahead of the festival. Check the festival website for vehicle size restrictions to ensure your chosen motorhome meets the requirements.

The drive from Pontefract is straightforward. Head south on the M1 to Junction 23A, then follow the A42 and A453 to Donington Park. On arrival days - typically Wednesday and Thursday - allow extra time for queuing traffic approaching the site. The marshalling is generally well organised, and once you are on site and pitched up, the rest of the weekend is yours. Bring provisions for the full weekend: while the food stalls on site are plentiful and varied, having your own kitchen for breakfast and late-night snacks is a genuine luxury.

Beyond the music, Download has developed a strong programme of comedy, signing sessions, wrestling, and other entertainment across the festival site. The signing tent, where bands meet fans and sign merchandise, is a particular highlight - the opportunity to shake hands with a musician whose album changed your life is one of those festival moments that stays with you. The village area offers fairground rides, bars, food courts, and a general hub of activity between performances.

The surrounding area offers options for extending your trip. The Peak District is less than an hour to the north-west, and the historic city of Nottingham is twenty minutes to the east. The National Brewery Centre in Burton upon Trent and the National Forest are both nearby. A motorhome from Heath's means you can turn your Download weekend into a broader Midlands trip, combining the festival with a few days of touring before or after.

Download Festival is where rock music comes to be celebrated, and attending in a motorhome lets you throw yourself into the experience without worrying about the weather, the mud, or the long walk back to a cold tent at two in the morning. Collect from our Pontefract depot, head south on the M1, and prepare for the loudest weekend of the year.
