About Doncaster

Discover Doncaster

Doncaster is one of our closest neighbours, sitting just 20 minutes east of our Pontefract depot along the A1(M). This ancient market town — it received its first charter in 1194 — has been shaped by horse racing, railways, and the coal industry, and today it offers motorhome travellers an easy collection point with excellent road links in every direction.

The town's most famous landmark is Doncaster Racecourse, home of the St Leger Stakes. Established in 1776, the St Leger is the oldest of the five English classics and the final leg of the Triple Crown. The racecourse draws visitors from across the country, and the atmosphere on St Leger day in September is electric. Even outside race days, the racecourse and its surroundings make for a pleasant walk, and the Doncaster Racing Museum, housed within the racecourse buildings, tells the story of the town's equestrian heritage.

Doncaster's market is one of the best in South Yorkshire. Held in the grand Market Hall and the open-air area around it, the market has been trading since the medieval period. Fresh produce, local meats, baked goods, and household items fill the stalls, and the adjoining Wool Market has been converted into a food hall with independent traders. The Mansion House, one of only three civic mansion houses in England, stands nearby — an elegant Georgian building that occasionally opens for guided tours.

Conisbrough Castle, a few miles south-west of Doncaster, is one of the finest Norman keeps in the country. Its cylindrical tower, built in the 1180s, is believed to have inspired Sir Walter Scott's novel Ivanhoe. The views from the top of the keep extend across the Don Valley and toward the rising ground of the Dearne. For history enthusiasts, it is an essential stop.

To the east of Doncaster, the landscape flattens dramatically into the Humberhead Levels — a vast area of lowland peat bog, farmland, and wetland that supports exceptional wildlife. Thorne and Hatfield Moors, now managed as a nature reserve, are among the largest lowland raised bogs in England. The birding here is outstanding, particularly during the winter months when short-eared owls hunt over the moors at dusk. Potteric Carr, a Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reserve on the southern edge of Doncaster, offers easy-access boardwalk trails through wetland, woodland, and grassland habitats.

Doncaster's transport connections are exceptional for motorhome travellers. The A1(M) runs north toward York and south toward Nottingham. The M18 connects to the M62 and the M1, giving you access to the entire motorway network. The M180 heads east toward the Humber Bridge and the Lincolnshire coast. From Doncaster, you can reach the Yorkshire Dales, the Peak District, the East Yorkshire coast, and the Lake District all within a few hours.

Cusworth Hall, a Georgian country house set in landscaped parkland on the western edge of Doncaster, houses the Museum of South Yorkshire Life. Its collection covers everything from domestic life to industrial heritage, and the grounds are a popular spot for walking and picnics. Brodsworth Hall, a few miles north-west of the town, is an English Heritage property preserved almost exactly as it was in the 1860s — a fascinating snapshot of Victorian country house life.

Being so close to Pontefract, Doncaster residents can be at our depot in barely 20 minutes. Collect your motorhome, fill up at one of the nearby service stations, and you are ready to head in any direction. With its central location and superb road links, Doncaster is one of the most practical bases for motorhome hire in the whole of Yorkshire.
