Discover Rotherham
Rotherham may not be the first place that comes to mind when planning a motorhome holiday, but this South Yorkshire town has more to offer than many visitors expect. Its industrial heritage is genuine and fascinating, its surrounding countryside is rich with history, and its position between Sheffield and Doncaster gives motorhome travellers easy access to both the Peak District and the flat, open landscapes of the Humberhead Levels. At approximately 30 minutes from our Pontefract depot via the M1, Rotherham is conveniently placed for collection.
The town's most remarkable asset sits just outside its boundaries. Wentworth Woodhouse is one of the largest country houses in Europe, with a Palladian east front stretching over 600 feet — longer than Buckingham Palace. Built in the eighteenth century for the Marquess of Rockingham, the house fell into disrepair over the twentieth century but has recently been acquired by a preservation trust and is undergoing major restoration. Guided tours of the state rooms, servants' quarters, and grounds are now available, and the experience of seeing this extraordinary building being brought back to life is genuinely moving.
The Wentworth estate village itself is worth exploring. Its stone cottages, estate buildings, and the Holy Trinity Church create an atmosphere of quiet rural elegance that belies its proximity to the urban areas of South Yorkshire. The Wentworth Garden Centre, set in the former kitchen gardens of the estate, is a popular local destination. Nearby, the Hoober Stand — a curious pyramidal tower built in 1748 to commemorate the defeat of the Jacobite Rebellion — offers panoramic views across the surrounding countryside from its hilltop position.
Rotherham Minster, in the town centre, is a fine perpendicular Gothic church dating from the fifteenth century. Its spire is one of the tallest in South Yorkshire, and the interior contains some excellent medieval woodwork and stained glass. The Chapel of Our Lady on the Bridge, one of only four surviving bridge chapels in England, stands on the medieval bridge over the River Don — a small but historically significant building.
The Rother Valley Country Park, created from former industrial land on the southern edge of Rotherham, is now a major recreational facility with lakes for watersports, walking and cycling trails, and a cable wakeboard park. The country park sits alongside the Chesterfield Canal, whose towpath provides a flat, easy route for walking or cycling toward Chesterfield and the edge of the Peak District.
Magna Science Adventure Centre, housed in the former Templeborough steelworks on the Sheffield-Rotherham border, is one of the most dramatic industrial conversions in the country. The massive steel shed — one of the largest buildings in Europe when it was built — now contains interactive science and technology exhibits organised around the four elements of earth, air, fire, and water. The fire exhibit, complete with a tornado of flame, is particularly spectacular.
For motorhome travellers, Rotherham's road connections are excellent. The M1 passes just to the west, providing direct routes north to Leeds and the Yorkshire Dales, and south toward Nottingham and the Midlands. The M18 heads east toward Doncaster and the A1(M), while the A57 runs west through Sheffield and over the Snake Pass into the Peak District. The A630 connects Rotherham directly to Sheffield, making it easy to take advantage of the larger city's cultural offerings while basing yourself in a quieter location.
The countryside to the east of Rotherham, stretching through Maltby and Tickhill toward Doncaster, offers gentle, rolling farmland with scattered villages and country pubs. This is less dramatic than the Peak District to the west, but it has a quiet charm of its own — and for motorhome touring, the empty roads and peaceful stopping spots are a genuine advantage.
