Motorhome Hire in Sheffield
Approximately 40 minutes from our depot, Sheffield sits where the city meets the Peak District — the greenest city in England and gateway to outstanding moorland walking.
Discover Sheffield
Sheffield has a legitimate claim to be the outdoor capital of England. No other city of its size — and with over half a million people it is a substantial place — can boast a national park within its boundaries. The Peak District National Park begins at the western edge of Sheffield, meaning that you can walk from the city centre to genuine moorland in under an hour. For motorhome travellers, this extraordinary proximity to wild landscape makes Sheffield one of the most exciting starting points in the country. Our Pontefract depot is approximately 40 minutes away via the M1, making collection quick and painless.
The city itself has undergone a remarkable cultural transformation. Kelham Island, a former industrial quarter on the River Don, is now one of the most vibrant neighbourhoods in the north. The Kelham Island Museum tells the story of Sheffield's steel industry, from the water-powered forges of the eighteenth century to the massive River Don Engine, a working steam engine that powered an armour plate rolling mill. The streets around the museum are packed with craft breweries, independent restaurants, and small galleries.
The Millennium Gallery in the city centre houses the Metalwork Collection, showcasing the decorative arts for which Sheffield was once world-famous. The Graves Gallery above the Central Library holds an excellent collection of nineteenth and twentieth-century art. The Crucible and Lyceum theatres, standing side by side on Tudor Square, offer a year-round programme of drama, comedy, and dance, with the Crucible also hosting the World Snooker Championship each spring.
Endcliffe Park and the Porter Valley run westward from the city, forming a green corridor that leads through Bingham Park and Forge Dam toward the moorland above. This walk, from the busy streets of Ecclesall Road to the silence of the moors, encapsulates what makes Sheffield unique. The Botanical Gardens in Broomhall, with their restored Victorian glasshouses, are another urban green space worth seeking out.
But it is the Peak District that defines Sheffield's appeal for motorhome hire. Stanage Edge, perhaps the most famous gritstone crag in England, is barely 20 minutes from the city centre by road. Climbers, walkers, and mountain bikers flock to this dramatic escarpment, which offers views that stretch across the Derwent Valley and beyond. The Upper Derwent Valley itself — home to Ladybower, Derwent, and Howden reservoirs — is steeped in history, including its role in the training of the Dambusters during the Second World War.
Further into the national park, Castleton sits beneath the shattered ramparts of Peveril Castle and is famous for its show caves — Peak Cavern, Speedwell Cavern, Treak Cliff Cavern, and the Blue John Cavern. The village is also the starting point for the ridge walk along Mam Tor, one of the classic Peak District routes. Edale, just over the ridge, is the southern terminus of the Pennine Way and has an atmosphere of genuine remoteness despite being less than an hour from Sheffield.
The Hope Valley, running east from Castleton through Hope and Hathersage toward Sheffield, is perfect motorhome country. The road winds through the valley between gritstone edges, with campsites and stopping points along the way. Hathersage, associated with Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre and home to an excellent outdoor swimming pool, is a favourite among Sheffield residents and visitors alike.
From our Pontefract depot, the M1 takes you directly to Sheffield in around 40 minutes. Once there, the A57 heads west through the city and over the Snake Pass — one of England's most dramatic mountain roads — toward Glossop and Manchester. The A625 runs through the Hope Valley, and the A621 climbs over the moors toward Baslow and Chatsworth. Every direction from Sheffield leads to adventure, and a motorhome is the perfect way to chase it.
