How Far in Advance Should You Book a Motorhome Hire?

It is one of the most common questions we get asked at Heath's Motorhome Hire, and the honest answer to when to book motorhome hire depends entirely on when you want to travel and what you want to do. There is no single right answer - peak summer school holidays are a completely different proposition from a quiet week in October - but understanding the patterns helps you plan better and avoid disappointment.

Here is what we have learned from years of running a motorhome hire business in Pontefract, laid out as plainly as we can.

Peak School Holidays: Book 3-6 Months Ahead

The summer school holidays - roughly mid-July to early September - are when demand for motorhome hire is at its highest across the entire UK. Every family with school-age children is competing for the same six-week window, and the supply of motorhomes is finite. At Heath's, our summer availability typically starts filling from January onwards, and by Easter most of the prime July and August weeks are taken.

If you know you want a motorhome during the summer holidays, advance booking motorhome hire three to six months ahead is sensible. Six months if you are flexible on dates, three months if you have specific weeks in mind. The Easter holidays (two weeks in April) follow a similar pattern, though demand is slightly lower because the weather is less reliable and fewer people take full two-week trips.

Half-term weeks - particularly the May half-term and October half-term - book up two to three months ahead. These are popular for shorter breaks of four to seven days, and because they fall in relatively pleasant weather (May especially), families snap them up early.

When to Book Motorhome Hire for Events and Festivals

Events create their own demand spikes that are completely independent of the school holiday calendar. The F1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, for example, generates a surge of bookings the moment the race date is confirmed - usually in the autumn for the following July. If you want a motorhome for the Grand Prix weekend, book within weeks of the date being announced. Leaving it until spring is too late.

Music festivals follow a similar pattern. Glastonbury, Download, Leeds Festival, Kendal Calling - as soon as you have your festival ticket, book the motorhome. Festival-goers are planners by nature, and the motorhome hire dates that coincide with major festivals go quickly. A general rule: book the motorhome within a month of buying your festival ticket.

Sporting events beyond F1 are more variable. The Open Championship, the Ashes, international rugby - these create localised demand depending on the venue. If the event is within our region (Yorkshire and the north of England), expect the dates to be popular. If it is further south, there is often more availability because most of our customers are heading in that direction anyway.

Shoulder Season: 1-2 Months Is Usually Fine

The shoulder seasons - April to mid-May and September to October - are the sweet spot for motorhome travel. The weather is often better than you expect (September in particular can be glorious), the campsites and roads are quieter, and prices are lower than peak summer. Booking one to two months ahead is normally sufficient during these periods, and you will have a wider choice of vehicles from our fleet.

Many experienced motorhomers deliberately target the shoulder season. The Lake District in September, the Scottish Highlands in May, the Yorkshire Dales in early October - these are arguably better experiences than the same trips in August, when campsites are rammed and the roads are busier. If your travel dates are flexible, the shoulder season is where the best value and best experiences coincide.

Winter and Off-Peak: Last Minute Works

From November through to March, motorhome hire demand drops significantly. The days are shorter, the weather is colder, and most casual hirers would not consider a motorhome trip in winter. This creates opportunities for the adventurous. Last-minute bookings - even a week before departure - are often possible during winter, and prices reflect the lower demand.

Winter motorhoming is not for everyone, but it has its rewards. The Yorkshire Dales under frost, a deserted Northumberland coast, the Northern Lights from the Scottish Highlands on a clear February night. Our motorhomes have blown-air heating systems that keep the interior warm regardless of external conditions, and winter campsites - those that stay open year-round - tend to be the most welcoming and well-maintained.

A Seasonal Booking Calendar

To summarise the guidance in one place:

January-February: Book summer holidays (July-August). Book Easter if you have fixed dates.

March: Book May half-term. Book festival and event weekends as soon as dates are confirmed.

April-May: Book September-October shoulder season trips. Last chance for summer availability.

June-August: Peak season - very limited motorhome hire availability for last-minute requests. Book autumn and winter trips.

September-October: Book Christmas and New Year if you are adventurous. Plan next year's summer early.

November-December: Last-minute winter availability. Start booking next summer's peak dates.

What Affects Availability Beyond Dates

It is not just about when you travel - it is also about how long you want the motorhome. Weekend hires (Friday to Monday) are the most popular format outside of school holidays, and they book up faster than mid-week hires. If you are flexible on collection day, a Monday or Tuesday start often gives you more options than a Friday collection.

Vehicle choice also matters. Our most popular motorhomes book out first, and if you have a specific vehicle in mind from our fleet, booking early gives you the best chance of getting it. If you are flexible on which motorhome you take, you will find availability for longer.

Bank holiday weekends - the early May bank holiday, the late May bank holiday, and the August bank holiday - behave like mini peak seasons. These three-day weekends are enormously popular for short motorhome breaks, and they book up well in advance. Treat them like school holidays in terms of your booking timeline.

The bottom line on when to book motorhome hire is straightforward: the earlier you book, the more choice you have. We never want to turn customers away, but motorhome hire is a finite resource and demand during peak periods genuinely outstrips supply. If you know when you want to travel, there is no advantage to waiting.
