About This Event

F1 British Grand Prix

The Formula 1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone is one of the greatest sporting events in the calendar, and attending in a motorhome transforms the experience from a day out into a proper adventure. Silverstone Circuit sits on the border of Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire, approximately two and a half hours south of our Pontefract depot via the M1 and A43. It is a longer drive than most of the events we cover, but the Grand Prix is a bucket-list occasion that justifies the journey — and a motorhome makes the logistics immeasurably easier.

The circuit itself is steeped in history. The first ever Formula 1 World Championship race was held at Silverstone in May 1950, and the circuit has hosted the British Grand Prix almost every year since. The current layout, revised in 2010 with the addition of the Arena complex and the Wing pit building, produces some of the best racing on the calendar. Copse, Maggotts, Becketts, and Stowe are among the most celebrated corners in motorsport, and the atmosphere when the cars blast through them at over 180 miles per hour is something that television simply cannot convey.

Race weekend typically runs from Friday to Sunday. Friday is practice day — a chance to find your bearings, explore the circuit, and watch the cars in a relatively relaxed atmosphere. Saturday brings qualifying, when the intensity ratchets up as drivers fight for grid positions. Sunday is race day itself, and the build-up from the morning warm-up through the drivers' parade to the formation lap is electric. The crowd at Silverstone is knowledgeable and passionate, and the roar that greets the start of the race is genuinely spine-tingling.

Beyond the track action, the Grand Prix has become a major festival in its own right. Live music acts perform on stages around the circuit each evening, with headline artists playing on Saturday night. The fan zones offer simulator experiences, driver appearances, and merchandise stalls. The food and drink provision has improved enormously in recent years, with street food vendors and craft beer bars joining the traditional burger vans. There is enough off-track entertainment to fill the gaps between sessions comfortably.

Camping is the traditional way to attend the Grand Prix, and Silverstone's dedicated campsite areas are well established. General camping opens from Wednesday before race weekend, giving you time to settle in and enjoy the build-up. Motorhome-specific pitches are available with electrical hook-ups, and the atmosphere in the camping areas — particularly on Saturday evening — is one of the highlights of the weekend. Book your camping ticket directly through the Silverstone website as soon as tickets go on sale, as the motorhome pitches sell out quickly.

The drive from Pontefract follows the M1 south to Junction 15A, then the A43 toward Silverstone. Allow three hours on Thursday or Friday to account for event traffic. On Sunday, the roads around the circuit become extremely busy from early morning, so aim to be settled on site the evening before. Bring plenty of provisions — while there are food outlets around the circuit, having your own kitchen in the motorhome saves both time and money over the weekend. A portable radio or the F1 timing app on your phone is essential for following the action when you are away from your grandstand seat.

The surrounding area offers pleasant diversified touring if you want to extend your trip. Stowe School and its landscaped gardens are nearby, Towcester is a charming market town, and the Cotswolds are within an hour's drive to the south-west. Alternatively, break the journey home with a stop at one of the campsites in the Peak District or the Yorkshire Dales, turning the Grand Prix into a week-long motorhome holiday.

The British Grand Prix is an event that rewards commitment. Arriving in your own motorhome, settling into the campsite, walking to the circuit through the crowds, and experiencing the raw power of Formula 1 at close range — it is a weekend you will not forget. And with Heath's Motorhome Hire in Pontefract, the whole thing starts with a simple collection from our depot.
