Motorhome Hire New Forest
The New Forest is one of those places that rewards a slow pace, which makes it a natural fit for motorhome hire New Forest holidays. This national park in Hampshire covers 219 square miles of ancient woodland, open heathland, and quiet villages, with over 3,000 ponies and donkeys roaming freely across the landscape. It is one of the most popular campervan hire New Forest destinations in southern England, and for good reason - the combination of easy walking, gentle cycling, traditional pubs, and a genuine sense of space makes it ideal for a motorhome break at any time of year.
Getting to the New Forest from Pontefract
The drive from our Pontefract depot to the New Forest takes around four and a half hours. Head south on the M1, pick up the M25, then take the M3 toward Southampton before joining the A31 into the heart of the forest. Lyndhurst, the unofficial capital of the New Forest, is roughly 250 miles from our depot. It is a comfortable day's drive in one of our motorhomes, and the last stretch along the A31 through open heathland is a fine introduction to what lies ahead.
Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst, and the Forest Villages
Lyndhurst sits at the centre of the national park and makes a natural first stop. The New Forest Museum on the high street is worth an hour for an overview of the forest's history, from its origins as a royal hunting ground under William the Conqueror to its present-day role as a working landscape. The village itself has a good range of pubs, tea rooms, and independent shops.
Brockenhurst, a few miles south, is arguably the prettiest village in the forest. Ponies drink at The Watersplash on the main street, donkeys wander through the centre, and the surrounding woodland is threaded with walking and cycling trails. Lymington, on the southern edge of the park, is a handsome sailing town with a Georgian high street, a busy harbour, and a Saturday market. The ferry to the Isle of Wight also departs from Lymington, making it easy to combine both destinations in a single trip.
New Forest Ponies and Wildlife
The free-roaming ponies are the defining feature of the New Forest and something you will encounter daily. Around 3,000 New Forest ponies and several hundred donkeys graze across the heathland, woodland, and village greens. They have right of way on all roads, and driving carefully around them is part of the experience. Cattle and pigs also roam freely during certain seasons. Beyond the livestock, the forest supports a rich variety of wildlife including deer, birds of prey, and rare reptiles on the heathland. Early mornings and quiet evenings are the best times for spotting deer in the woodland clearings.
Walking and Cycling in the New Forest
The New Forest is outstanding for both walking and cycling, with hundreds of miles of trails through woodland and across open heath. The Tall Trees Trail near Blackwater winds through towering redwoods and Douglas firs - a surprising landscape for the south of England. The coastal path from Lymington toward Keyhaven offers views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight. Cycling is particularly popular, with dedicated off-road routes that are flat, well-surfaced, and suitable for families. Bikes can be hired in Brockenhurst and Burley, and the forest's network of gravel tracks means you can cover ground without sharing the road with traffic.
Campsites for New Forest Motorhome Camping
New Forest motorhome camping is well catered for, with a good selection of sites across the national park. Hollands Wood Campsite near Brockenhurst is a Forestry England site set among mature trees with direct access to walking and cycling trails. Red Shoot Camping Park near Linwood has over 95 pitches, most with electric hook-up, and a peaceful, family-friendly atmosphere. Long Meadow Campsite, a short drive from Brockenhurst, welcomes motorhomes and offers a quiet base in the heart of the forest. Hurst View Leisure near Lymington has views across the Solent and is within walking distance of the town. Most New Forest sites offer electric hook-up and waste disposal, and the compact size of the national park means you can base yourself at one site and reach everything by road or trail.
Beyond the Forest
The New Forest sits within easy reach of several other destinations worth exploring by motorhome. The Dorset and Jurassic Coast begins around 30 miles to the west, with its dramatic cliffs, fossils, and coastal walking. Beaulieu, on the eastern edge of the forest, is home to the National Motor Museum - a fine rainy-day option. Winchester, the ancient capital of England, lies 20 miles to the north and is well worth a morning's visit for the cathedral alone.
