About Motorhome Road Trip
A road trip is one of the purest forms of travel. No fixed destination, no rigid schedule, just the open road ahead of you and the freedom to follow it wherever it leads. A motorhome takes that idea and elevates it, because you are not just driving through places - you are living in them. Your accommodation, your kitchen, and your living room are all right there with you, and every stop along the route becomes a potential home for the night.
At Heath's Motorhome Hire in Pontefract, we are perfectly placed for road trips in every direction. Our location in West Yorkshire puts you at the crossroads of the motorway network, with the A1, M1, M62, and A64 all within minutes. Whether you are heading north to Scotland, south to the coast, west to Wales and the Lake District, or east to the Yorkshire coast, the journey begins the moment you pull out of our depot.
The classic UK motorhome road trip heads north. From Pontefract, you can follow the A1 through the North Yorkshire countryside, stopping at Thirsk, Northallerton, or Darlington before crossing into County Durham and Northumberland. The Northumberland coast road, running from Alnmouth through Bamburgh to Berwick-upon-Tweed, is one of the finest stretches of coastal driving in England. Cross the border into Scotland and the route continues through the Borders, Edinburgh, and the Highlands. The North Coast 500, a 516-mile circuit of the Scottish Highlands, is widely regarded as one of the world's great road trips and is ideally suited to motorhome travel.
Heading west from Pontefract takes you through the Yorkshire Dales on some of the most scenic roads in England. The A65 through Skipton and Settle leads to the Lake District, while the A66 crosses the Pennines through Stainmore to reach the Eden Valley and Penrith. From there, the M6 opens up the whole of the north-west, or you can strike south through the Lakes to reach Lancashire and the coast. For a longer trip, continue into Wales via the A55 along the North Wales coast, or drop south through Shrewsbury to reach the Brecon Beacons and Pembrokeshire.
A southern route offers a completely different character. The M1 takes you through the East Midlands to the Cotswolds, the rolling hills of the South Downs, and the beaches of the south coast. Devon and Cornwall, though further afield at around five hours from Pontefract, reward the journey with dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, and some of the finest seafood in the country. The Jurassic Coast, stretching from Exmouth to Studland Bay, is a World Heritage Site and offers spectacular walking along its 95-mile length.
The beauty of a motorhome road trip is that you do not need to plan every detail in advance. Carry a good road atlas alongside your sat nav, keep an eye out for brown tourist signs, and be prepared to follow your instincts. Some of the best moments on a road trip come from unplanned detours - the village you stopped at because the pub looked inviting, the viewpoint you pulled over at because the light was extraordinary, the campsite you chose on a whim that turned out to be the highlight of the trip.
Practical planning does help, though. We recommend booking campsites in advance during peak season (July, August, and bank holidays), particularly in popular areas like the Lake District, Cornwall, and the Scottish Highlands. Outside peak times, you will find plenty of availability at sites across the country, and many accept walk-ins. Our motorhomes come with everything you need for the road - bedding, cooking equipment, crockery, and all the essentials.
For a weekend break, a road trip through the Dales or along the Yorkshire coast makes a perfect introduction. For a week, you can comfortably reach Scotland, Wales, or the south coast and back. For a longer hire, the whole of the UK opens up, and some of our customers combine two or three weeks to cover ground from Land's End to John o' Groats. However long you have, a motorhome road trip from Heath's Motorhome Hire is an adventure you will not forget.
